El Dorado clash again with Hillview
Roger Seepersad - Trinidad Express
PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) Division One champions El Dorado East Secondary and third place finishers Hillview College go at it again today, this time in an InterCol semi-final at Buggy Haynes Ground, Tacarigua from 10 a.m.
Both teams squared off in the League final last year, with El Dorado coming out on top, while Hillview pulled one back in 2010, defeating their cross-town rivals during the league season.
In today’s other semi-final, San Fernando Central Secondary, who were promoted to the SSCL Championship Division last year, take on Fatima College at Syne Village, Penal. That match also starts at 10 a.m.
The SSCL Senior Division Twenty20 semi-finals are also scheduled for today, with Barataria South Secondary taking on Signal Hill at Aranjuez and Carapichaima East Secondary hosting Moruga at Carapichaima.
At Tacarigua, West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Yannic Cariah will lead the charge for El Dorado, who will be banking on the experience of CLICO Preysal Twenty20 opener Aaron Alfred, Central Zone Under-19 all-rounder Travis Karim and pacer Kern Matheson to get them to the final.
Alfred, Cariah and Matheson were all involved in the 2008 final against Presentation College Chaguanas and they will be the key for El Do in their quest to lift their first InterCol title, but they will have to be wary of their opponents who are the only team to defeat them this season.
Hillview have a younger bunch of players who are now trying to find a place in the Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 squad.
Isaiah Rajah and Idrees Mohammed both scored centuries for East Zone in the recent BG T&T InterZone tournament and have been in good form for their school in the league competition earlier this year.
Both are also very capable bowlers and will add variety to Hillview’s squad, which also includes batting all-rounders Anthony Jawahir and Anthony Simmons.
Fatima College’s Akeal Hosein is another all-rounder with the potential to make the T&T under-19 side and is the latest player to score a century in the 30-over InterCol competition.
Hosein spanked an undefeated 100 and took two for 35 to lead Fatima past Shiva Boys Hindu College last week. Joshua Ramdoo scored 50 not out in that match and the pair will be keen on getting some more big scores with the national under-19 trials just around the bend.
San Fernando Central have been the surprise package in the tournament so far, knocking out past finalists Iere High School last week.
Their skipper and former national under-17 all-rounder Marcelle Jones will be hoping his side can cause another upset in the competition.
