International School win Digicel title

It was a fight to the finish, with only a break coming near to the end, but when the final whistle was blown, it was the International School of Port of Spain (ISPS) that would walk away with the prestigious title of being the Under-17 champions of the Digicel Schools Rugby League over St Mary’s College.

The game along with the under-14 contest between St Mary’s and Tranquillity took place last Saturday, December 12 at the St Mary’s Grounds.

The hotly contested game would leave the CIC boys in the dust with a resounding 12-7 defeat, much to the deafening applause of the supporters who were on hand for the gripping action. However, the St Mary’s junior team scored a very definitive win over Tranquillity of 21-5, earning them the main trophy in their category.

This is Digicel’s second year of sponsoring the Secondary Schools Rugby League.

Natalie Black, Digicel’s Sponsorship/PR Officer noted that: ’Digicel was very pleased with the quality of rugby played by the schools participating in the tournament. We saw more interest coming from players in the 20 schools, which translated into an increase in players and that says that the sport is growing in popularity.’

She continued:’ Digicel was appreciative of the opportunity to lend support to the development of a discipline that not only adds diversity to the sporting landscape but also seeks to bolster the legacy of the rugby and provides so much fun in the process. We congratulate the winning teams on their success and applaud the teams that took part in the tournament.’
